Daily Devotion: What God Hates: Transvestitism

Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 22:1-10

Key Verse: Verse 5 - “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.”

Strangely enough, Deuteronomy 22:5 evokes strong feelings in regard to modesty in dress, particularly the dress of women.

But this verse goes well beyond the modesty issue; it delves into the immoral perversion and deception. Note the following in regard to this verse.

    The word “pertaineth unto” (Heb
keli) in the original language is used elsewhere not only of clothes, but also of decorations or utensils used by the opposite sex. The intent of this law was to maintain the distinction between the sexes. Today, it would apply to any unisex clothing that would cloud the distinction between men and women. The New Testament recognizes such a distinction (1 Cor. 11:3) and maintains that long hair on women was a sign of that distinction (1 Cor. 11:6-14). During the days of Moses, garments (Heb simlah) worn by men and women were similar (robes), so this command was designed to keep a woman from appearing as a man and a man from appearing as a woman. In Deuteronomy 22:5 goes well beyond modest dress. It is dealing with an attempt to deceive in hiding one’s real gender. We call it transvestitism. It is a sin that God hates. It’s an abomination. But I repeat – it goes beyond the modest dress issue!! It’s an issue of immoral perversion!! It’s a sin that reveals the depravity of man!!
