Daily Devotion: The When in Creation

Bible Reading: Genesis 2:1-7

Key Verse: Verse 4 – “These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,"

Key Words: when they were created

The word "when" deals with a time period—when something took place. In our text, the time period is “creation” when things were created.

When God creates, He takes nothing and makes something. So when God created the heavens and the earth, he took “nothing” and made “something.” This should give us great comfort during these trying times and times when all seems lost. To know that if God can take “nothing” and create the heavens and the earth, then any problem I may face is nothing for Him to resolve.

Think about this from Isaiah 40:
  • The oceans of the world contain more than 340 quintillion gallons of water, yet God holds them “in the hollow of his hand” (40:12).
  • The earth weighs 6 sextillion metric tons, yet God says it is but “dust on the scales” (40:15).
  • The known universe stretches more than 30 billion light years (200 sextillion miles), but God measures it by the width of His hand(40:12).
  • Scientists claim there are at least 100 billion galaxies, and each galaxy is made up of about 100 billion stars. To such mind-boggling math, Isaiah reminds us that God calls each star “by name” (40:26).

What to do:
✞ Name for me any problem you have that God cannot handle.
